I'd been meaning to do NZ for several years, to the point of even having booked plane tickets. However I couldn't find a
buddy to go with on this one, and it didn't seem like a good trip for doing independantly. So a tour group would be
good, but it was hard to find a good one that covered all the things I wanted to experience on both islands in a reasonable
time. Surfing the net I eventually ran into this tour.
I have been on quite a few tours, often an older group. Sometimes I was the youngest. Well, I know I was reaching the Contiki
cut-off of 35 pretty soon (remember the movie
"Logan's Run" where they killed you when you reached 30?)-
but I ended up being the
third oldest person on the trip. We had many in their early 20's, and some that had never traveled before.
There was big drinking every night, and about half way through I had to cut it off. Almost everyone
on the trip got sick with a cold.
Good group of folks.
However my analogy for this trip is the following- I did feel like the group was at the
"Before Sunrise" stage, and I had for better or worse
moved on to the
"Before Sunset" one
(sans a bad marriage and successful writing career).
Also this was supposed to be the optimum time of year to visit, but we ended up having uncharacteristically chilly and rainy
weather about 70% of the time. I must say temperature wise my experience with this country was no happy medium-
you would be cold, and as soon as you put a jumper on the weather would change and you would get hot.
But New Zealand is a beautiful country with very nice people- lots of the aloha spirit there.
